How do I share an Excel spreadsheet as a read-only link?
Upload your .xls or .xlsx file and Linkjar turns it into a read-only link: readers see the values laid out exactly as in Excel, but they can't view your formulas, edit anything, or break your file.
How to do it
- Go to the Excel to link page and upload your spreadsheet.
- Linkjar renders it to a snapshot and gives you a shareable link.
- Share that link. It opens in any browser, no Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers needed, and no account required for the person viewing it.
The link is a fixed, read-only view, not a live spreadsheet, so there's no editing, sorting, or recalculating on the other end. Formulas aren't visible either: readers only see the resulting values.
Get the layout right before you upload
Because the rendered version paginates the way Excel prints, it's worth spending a couple of minutes on the print setup first:
- Select the cells that matter and set them as the print area (Page Layout > Print Area > Set Print Area).
- Set scaling to fit to 1 page wide so wide tables don't get sliced into columns across pages.
- Switch to landscape if your table has more than about eight columns.
- Set rows to repeat at top under Print Titles so every page keeps its column headings.
- Hide or delete any sheets you don't want included (hidden sheets are left out of the render, but deleting from a copy is safer).
- Check Print Preview to confirm it looks the way you want, since that's what your reader will see.
Why this works better than sending the file
- Read-only by default, so nobody can change your numbers or formulas, on purpose or by accident.
- One source of truth: update the file and the same link shows the latest version, so there's no confusion over which copy is current.
- Opens anywhere, with no spreadsheet software needed to view it.
- Trackable, so you can see how many times it's been opened.
If people actually need to edit it
A rendered link isn't the right tool if your reader needs to interact with the data (filtering, sorting, pivot tables, and cell comments don't carry over). In that case, share the live file instead, for example through OneDrive or Google Sheets, so they can co-edit it directly.
Good to know
- Uploading, converting, and getting a link are free, along with a QR code, embedding, and view tracking.
- You can add password protection if you need to restrict who can see it, for example a price list or rate card.
- Paid plans add more documents, larger files, a custom domain, and branding removal. See pricing for details.
