Sending documents
Send a link instead of an attachment

Why send a link instead of an attachment?
Attachments hit size limits, get caught by spam filters, can't be changed or taken back once sent, and never tell you if they were opened. A link to the document fixes all four: any size, nothing to block, always the latest version, revocable at any time, and with Linkjar you see who opened it and when.

How to send a PDF by email as a link
- 1Upload the PDF (or PowerPoint, Word file, video or web page) above.
- 2Copy the link. Add a password, an email gate or an expiry date if it's private.
- 3Paste the link into your email instead of attaching the file, then send.

How to send large files over email
Most email services cap attachments: Gmail at 25 MB (bigger files become a Google Drive link), Outlook at around 20 MB, and many company mail servers lower still. Encoding adds about a third to a file's size, so a 20 MB deck can already be too big. Upload the file to Linkjar and send the link instead: the email stays tiny and the recipient streams the document page by page, even on a phone.
How to send documents securely
Don't attach anything sensitive: once it's sent you can't take it back. Send a link and choose how locked down it is. Add a password (sent separately, by text or chat). Turn on the email gate and accept only the client's domain. Set an expiry date. Keep downloads off. You can switch the link off the moment a deal falls through. How to password-protect a PDF.
Sending decks to clients and investors
Make a personal link for each recipient instead of one link for everyone. You'll see that the buyer opened it twice and read the pricing page, or that the investor forwarded it to a partner. Then follow up at the right moment, not a week later. More on document tracking. Sending several documents? Put them in one sales room or data room link.
Changed something after you sent it?
With an attachment you send a second email titled "v2 (final)". With a link, replace the file and the same link shows the new version to everyone who has it.
What to write in the email
Keep it short and put the link on its own line: "Hi Sam, here's the deck we talked about: [link]. The pricing options are on page 6. Happy to go through it on a call this week." Point to the page that matters. People open links more readily than unexpected attachments, and you'll know when they did.
Isn't a Google Drive link the same thing?
A Drive or Dropbox link solves the size limit, and it's fine for internal files. For anything you send to clients or investors it falls short: it shows Google's or Dropbox's interface, often asks the recipient to sign in or request access, and won't tell you whether it was opened. A Linkjar link opens straight away, carries your logo and domain, and reports every view.
Questions
- How do I send a PDF as a link?
- Upload it to Linkjar, copy the link and paste it into your email or message. It's free and the recipient doesn't need an account.
- What's the attachment limit in Gmail and Outlook?
- Gmail allows 25 MB per email and Outlook about 20 MB, and many company servers allow less. A link has no such limit, because the file isn't in the email.
- Is a link less secure than an attachment?
- Usually it's more secure. An attachment can be forwarded and kept forever. A link can have a password, be limited to one company's email domain, expire, and be switched off.
- Will the link look suspicious to the recipient?
- Use your own domain (paid plans), like docs.yourcompany.com, and the link carries your name instead of a file-sharing service's.
- Can I send PowerPoint or Word files this way?
- Yes. They're converted to a viewer that opens on any device, so the recipient doesn't need Office.
